Expansion Details

Expanding Ka Ni Kanichihk’s existing home will maintain our presence in Winnipeg’s West Alexander/Point Douglas neighbourhood and ensure that safe space and services are accessible in surrounding neighbourhoods with high concentrations of Indigenous people. The $8-million expansion project will take Ka Ni Kanichihk’s home from 8,700 SF to 22,000 SF.

The Building Expansion project will:

  • include renovation of the existing building to blend the new and existing structures, providing both a consistent look and functionality and a welcoming ‘fresh face’ in the neighbourhood
  • feature interior design treatments that reflect Indigenous cultures
  • create approximately 70 square feet of play, sleep, and programming space for each child in the daycare centre, representing the high end of Manitoba’s standard of best practices in early learning and childcare centres
  • provide kitchen and community space that can boost earned revenues.

Ka Ni Kanichihk’s expansion will also allow us to embark on earned-revenue initiatives. We will establish a training arm offering education and training programs in partnership with Red River College, as well as deliver programming to guide non-Indigenous organizations in cultural awareness and anti-oppressive practices.
