On June 24th, Ka Ni Kanichihk was proud and excited to unveil the designs for our building expansion. Working with a design team of Verne Reimer Architecture in collaboration with Indigenous Design Studio at Brook Mcilroy and Woven Collaborative, the expansion will create 14,200SF of additional space in a new two-storey build, allowing Ka Ni Kanichihk to offer an Indigenous-led culturally safe space for expanded healing, growth and skills development to twice as many people.
Almost since the day Ka Ni Kanichihk opened at 455 McDermot Avenue in Winnipeg 20 years ago, it was too small to accommodate those who wanted services. The community has told us they need additional training programs, more healing opportunities for youth and families and an accessible community gathering place – all centred around ceremony. Ka Ni Kanichihk hosted a virtual community gathering to shape the vision for the new spaces, and we are thrilled with the design that the architecture team is bringing to life from your community input.
Some community comments about the design:
“Beautiful community space” Marilyn Bennett
“The building design is spectacular. The Ka Ni Kanichihk community is inspiring” Sharon Bruce
“This is what self-determination looks like” Leslie Spillett

We are fundraising now, with the hope of starting construction in late 2021.
If you are able, we invite you to consider a gift. Every gift, no matter what size, adds space and programs for our community.
