Restoring The Sacred
A student buddy support service/youth mentorship program is a culturally based prevention and intervention program for Aboriginal youth between the age of 15-21 who have relocated from northern and/or rural communities to Winnipeg to pursue their education.
Restoring the Sacred is designed to restore and nurture positive self identification and well-being among youth who, due to both historical factors and contemporary realities, have resulted in social and economic conditions that leave them vulnerable to victimization and violence. This unique and exciting prevention project is integral to the Manitoba Government's Healthy Child response to ending youth exploitation.
Program Goals
Restoring the Sacred will accomplish the goal that its name implies-developing youth who believe that their lives are worthwhile, important and sacred.
Restoring the Sacred will assist to prevent victimization of youth, support youth to stay connected or to reconnect to schools and community school and restore "belonging", "mastery", "independence" and "generosity" in youth participants.
The program is seeking to assist Aboriginal youth transition to Winnipeg by offering cultural based, social development, recreational activities and mentorship training.
Program Eligibility
- Aboriginal ancestry.
- Between the age of 15-21.
- Youth transitioning from rural community to urban area.
- Youth looking to develop healthy support systems.
- Youth have a desire to participate in a program designed to assist them in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- Youth interested in learning more about their culture.
- Youth whom have shown a commitment to their academic program which is reflected in their attendance and performance.
Program Description
The youth of Restoring the Sacred will participate in activities that acknowledge their unique gifts and the importance of sharing these gifts with those around them.
Youth will participate in activities that nurture, develop and deepen confidence, responsibility, self discipline, inner control, leadership, assertiveness, autonomy and independence. These activities will include peer counseling, reclaiming healthy life styles, public speaking and developing linkages with the community.
